  • Nando's - Talk to the hand
The friendly battle of the brands started when Nando’s, the usual suspects, spoofed the well-known Santam TV commercial featuring Sir Ben Kingsley.

In response Santam hit them back with a challenge. They’d be prepared to overlook the spoof ad if Nando’s followed their instructions to have meals delivered to the Johannesburg Children’s Home by 4pm today.

Nando’s gladly accepted the terms, delivered a day early and has guaranteed to provide the children’s home with free Nando’s meals once a month for a whole year. This is our official response entitled ‘Talk to the hand.’

It was shot (without a director), edited, finished & uploaded in 1 day.

  • 2010 Football World Cup Campaign
During the build-up to the FIFA World Cup, we came across some strange misconceptions foreigners seem to have about South Africa and the people that live here. How were we going to convince them that all those misconceptions are not true? Well, we didn’t. Instead we gave them exactly what they wanted. For our "Only i-best for ama-visitors" Campaign we used the different misconceptions to create a campaign that was not only engaging but entertaining as well.

The idea is that during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, we will be giving our visitors exactly what they want. If they believe we have animals that roam our city streets, then that’s exactly what they will get. If they think our women walk around bare-breasted, then that’s exactly what we would encourage South Africans to do. We pulled off a successful World Cup campaign that entertained the locals, accommodated the foreigners and sold some chicken while we were at it. And we did all of this without being the official sponsors and without offending FIFA.

  • MINI lands at OR Tambo International Airport
To launch the new MINI Countryman we landed it onto its own tarmac - runway lights included, which really came to life at night. This was an excellent fit as it was at the OR Tambo International airport in South Africa.

  • 1st for Women’s Phenomenal woman
1st for Women is an insurance company catering to the specific needs of women. What better place to tell the story of 8 extraordinary South African women that inspire us. We decided to dedicate their website to the women of South Africa by sharing these stories and adding another, more human layer to the insurance brand personality. I shot with the photographer Merwelene van der Merwe.

  • Nando's Kids typeface
We created the Nando's Kids typeface together with the help of the Huegenote Primary school in South Africa. They colored in the letters & drew little illustrations and we put it all together to create a new fresh look for Nando's Kids. The money that would've been spent on paying illustrators & typographers were used to pay for the kids school fees.

  • SAB DUI campaign
This campaign was a follow up campaign to the South African Breweries' "reality check" campaign. It continued building on the informative way of communicating with the viewer/ reader by giving them the hard hitting facts. But always staying away from the shock tactic, which just works 1st time around and then seems to have less and less of an effect. The typesetting is more serious and bold to fit in with the messaging.

  • Redds - Do your thing
The biggest problem that this drink had was that it had "no street cred". It lost it's cool factor and was only being drunk by an older crowd of people. This is how we introduced a new lease of life to the brand - night life, excitement & adventure waiting around each corner.

  • Nando's Daily Bun
This was a campaign to promote the Kota Bun at Nando's. We used the Daily Sun as a parody and created our own streetpole headlines, newspaper articles and even a website where you could generate your own headlines.

  • Nando's Makarapa
The Makarapa is s hand-cut and hand-painted hard hat worn by sports fans. They belong to the typical South African Football fan's supporters gear, and are increasingly popular with fans of other sports. Sport fans spend hours to sculpt and paint their makarapa in the colours and emblem of their clubs or country. Besides the makarapa, fans also wear giant glasses or have shields with team slogans and logos. This poster illustrates the particular social commentary that was current at the time in South Africa during the Confederations Cup.
I helped illustrate this with Justin Joshua & Peet Pienaar.

  • Nando's Cataplana - The Portuguese-ish dish
We created a campaign for the new Cataplana meals at Nando's using the line - The Portuguese-ish dish. Which broadly ment that it was a little bit of Portuguese influence and a whole lot of Nando's perfection. The campaign then gets packaged into a booklet for the regions to work from.

I worked with the illustrators at Radio to make all of this happen.
